Downsizing: Building a New Home for Your Golden Years

Downsizing, despite the name, is quite possibly one of the biggest property moves you’ll ever make. Perhaps your kids have left home, or you’d like to move to a quieter neighbourhood. Maybe you’d just like a more low maintenance place in your current area. While it may be a daunting decision to move on from your family home, choosing to celebrate your golden retirement years in a newly built home sure makes the prospect more exciting.

With careful planning, you’ll soon find yourself going from an empty nest to a happy new chapter of life.

Plan for future needs

Your knees might be alright now, but climbing stairs might become less appealing as you get older. When selecting a block to build your new home, be sure to pick a lot with sufficient area for your ideal single-storey design. A well-proportioned, open plan layout is ideal to ensure accessibility within your home. And a flat block that’s a good size and in a good location is the ideal combo.

Enough room for the family

Although you might be downsizing and moving on from the family, that doesn’t mean saying goodbye to your role as family event host. If your place has always been the destination for family lunches and special occasions, make sure your new home will still accommodate all your would-be visitors.

Going from your six-bedroom, three-bathroom family home to a four-bedroom, two-bathroom space, for instance, will still give you ample room. The key is choosing a home design that gives you a little room to move. Look for home designs that include an extra living space, or an outdoor alfresco. These separate areas will be perfectly utilised with the grandkids come over.

Downsize to upsize your lifestyle

When downsizing your home, look for a location that will allow you to live the lifestyle you want. Think about your favourite places to holiday and what you loved about them. Or pick a location to suit your new priorities, a quieter neighbourhood for instance.

Choosing to build new in an area such as Deanside will deliver you the best of both worlds: a beautiful and convenient location. You’ll have a wide array of established amenities on your doorstep such as shops, medical facilities, recreation and open spaces. Plus, you’re well placed when you feel the need for adventure, with areas like Macedon Regional Park only a 30 minute drive away or Torquay, about an hour and a half.

At the end of the day, choose a location and a home that feels right for you and will allow you to enjoy the lifestyle you prefer. And if you’d like to chat with us about starting a new chapter at Bowery, give us a call on 0427 398 171. We’d be more than happy to assist.
